In a Time of Uncertainty, Renewable Energy Remains a Definite Priority
COVID-19 has crossed paths with a growing appetite for renewable energy growth in the Caribbean. Such projects show promise for a cleaner future and energy resilience in the region.
At this time, continued enthusiasm and support for renewable growth is essential for these goals to remain on track.
TUGLIQ Energy and construction partner SALT Energy are therefore excited to share progress on the commissioning of the renewable hybrid microgrid for Ragged Island.
This 402kWdc solar PV and 1,336kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be the first high penetration renewable microgrid for the Bahamian utility.
The solar PV arrays are fully installed, and test electricity has been temporarily injected into the grid as part of the commissioning. The energy storage system is on site and awaiting return of normal activities to be put in service.
This solar-storage-diesel solution is a high renewable energy penetration microgrid that will reduce up to 90% of the island’s fossil fuel consumption.
As most other Family Islands across The Bahamas, Ragged Island was 100% diesel dependent for all of its energy needs. Devastation to the Island’s power grid following Hurricane Irma created an opportunity to design and implement a cleaner and more resilient power grid.
Bahamas Power & Light Company Ltd. (BPL) and Rocky Mountain Institute launched a public tender to provide such a solution. TUGLIQ and SALT’s winning bid features a solution that is resilient, with solar panels designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes, and an energy storage solution to maximize solar output and minimally rely on the back-up diesel component.
This project contributes to the Island’s energy autonomy and resilience as well as providing local employment.
